Agents for Google Sheets

Pump Up connects hosted AI agents to Google Sheets to automate recurring tabular workflows including client reporting approval, revenue reconciliation exceptions, monthly KPI review, and quarterly KPI planning. The agent reads designated sheet ranges or exported CSV files, compares recorded figures against primary billing and CRM sources, highlights variances or missing entries, and prepares structured adjustments. Human owners review and approve every ledger modification before any row update or destination cell write is applied.

When to use it

Operations leaders, finance managers, and business operators who rely on Google Sheets as an operational ledger, staging sheet, or executive reporting dashboard.

Example scenario

A finance operator uses an agent to reconcile monthly revenue entries in a Google Sheet against Stripe payout records. The agent reads range A2:G150 from the Revenue_Ledger tab and identifies a 450 dollar variance where invoice INV-8821 was recorded as paid in Stripe but left blank in the spreadsheet. Instead of editing the formula-dependent summary row, the agent stages a proposed row update with the Stripe charge ID and transaction timestamp in the Review_Staging tab. The operator reviews the discrepancy, approves the adjustment, and the agent writes the verified entry to the ledger while appending an audit note with the approval timestamp.

Getting started

  • Select the relevant spreadsheet and configure a dedicated tab or named range for agent inspection
  • Grant Google Sheets API v4 access using OAuth 2.0 or a Google Cloud service account with minimal necessary permissions
  • Define explicit staging or review columns so the agent never overwrites existing formulas or raw inputs directly
  • Assign responsible team members to review and sign off on proposed row adjustments or reporting drafts

Common questions

Can the agent overwrite formulas or summary cells in Google Sheets?

No. The agent is configured to read specified input ranges and write only to designated output columns or staging tabs. Formula-calculated summary cells and protected ranges remain untouched unless an operator explicitly designates a cell as an editable target.

What permissions does Google Sheets require for agent workflows?

For read-only auditing and reporting, the agent uses the Google Sheets readonly scope (https://www.googleapis.com/auth/spreadsheets.readonly). Workflows requiring cell updates or staging row inserts use the standard spreadsheets scope (https://www.googleapis.com/auth/spreadsheets), ideally restricted to designated service accounts with sheet-level sharing.

How does the workflow handle changes when API access cannot be granted?

When live Google Sheets API credentials are not configured, operators export the target sheet as a CSV or XLSX file and attach it to the run. The agent analyzes the exported records and provides structured adjustment proposals that the operator reviews and applies manually.

How does the workflow handle race conditions or simultaneous edits in shared sheets?

The agent inspects row contents and timestamps prior to staging an update and re-checks values before writing to detect intervening changes. While Google Sheets API batchUpdate applies request batches atomically, the API does not provide conditional compare-and-set locking against concurrent collaborator edits. Teams mitigate collision risks by using dedicated staging tabs, protected ranges, and owner escalation when conflicting modifications are detected.

How these workflows use your software

Client reporting approval

Source records
Monthly performance metrics, campaign numbers, and raw delivery logs recorded across client tracking sheets
Agent work
Compares recorded figures against billing benchmarks, identifies missing delivery notes, and highlights calculation variances
Result
Structured client performance draft summary and flagged metric discrepancies requiring clarification
Human decision
Account manager approves the final performance narrative and authorizes sending report to client

Workflow example

Source records
Transaction rows, invoice line items, and settlement totals exported from payment gateways into reconciliation tabs
Agent work
Matches bank deposits and payment gateway payouts against accounting ledger rows, identifying unmatched charges and timing differences
Result
Staged reconciliation adjustment table detailing variance amounts, transaction IDs, and suggested account codes
Human decision
Finance controller reviews discrepancy findings, approves adjustment entries, and signs off on ledger balance

Monthly KPI review

Source records
Departmental KPI submissions, target benchmarks, and operational tracking values in monthly dashboard tabs
Agent work
Verifies submitted metric formulas, detects anomalous period-over-period swings, and checks completeness across departments
Result
Monthly KPI review briefing outlining on-track metrics, at-risk targets, and required department explanations
Human decision
Operations director evaluates variance rationales, confirms KPI status flags, and assigns corrective action owners

Quarterly KPI planning

Source records
Historical quarterly performance sheets, proposed department targets, and resource capacity estimates
Agent work
Reconciles baseline run-rates with proposed growth projections, highlighting capacity constraints and unsupported assumptions
Result
Consolidated quarterly planning model comparing proposed targets against historical actuals and department submissions
Human decision
Executive leadership reviews planning scenarios, adjusts strategic targets, and formally approves quarterly goals
